Contactin-2 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored neuronal membrane protein that functions as a cell adhesion molecule. It may play a role in the formation of axon connections in the developing nervous system. It may also be involved in glial tumorigenesis and may provide a potential target for therapeutic intervention.Functional studies in vitro of axonal surface glycoproteins suggest that they are involved in cell adhesion and in the promotion of neurite outgrowth. One of these proteins, the rat transient axonal glycoprotein (Tag1), is expressed by restricted subsets of central and peripheral neurons during the initial phase of neurite outgrowth . Tag1 belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily.
