COL27A1 is a gene the codes for type XXVII collagen. It was discovered by Dr. James M. Pace and his colleagues at the University of Washington. This gene appears to be turned on in cartilage, the eye, and in the ear.

Type XXVII collagen is related to the "fibrillar" class of collagens and may play a role in development of the skeleton. The transcript contains a MIR repetitive element in the 5-prime UTR, and the deduced protein shares 43% identity over 413 amino acids with COL1A1.

RT-PCR ELISA detected expression in all tissues and specific brain regions examined. Highest expression was in cerebellum, followed by spinal cord, and lowest expression was in skeletal muscle and fetal brain.
