Aminoacyl tRNA synthetases catalyze the aminoacylation of tRNA by their cognate amino acid. Because of their central role in linking amino acids with nucleotide triplets contained in tRNAs, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are thought to be among the first proteins that appeared in evolution.
Threonyl-tRNA synthetase belongs to the class-II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase family.Of the 7 aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase genes mapped to that time, 4 were known to be on chromosome 5, which represents only about 7% of the total human genome. By study of human-hamster cell hybrids, TARS is very closely linked to LARS; the latter is located at 5pter-q11 .
