Casein kinase I isoform delta is a member of the casein kinase I (CKI) gene family whose members have been implicated in the control of cytoplasmic and nuclear processes, including DNA replication and repair. The encoded protein is highly similar to the mouse and rat CK1 delta homologs. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Casein kinase I is an ubiquitous serine/threonine-specific protein kinase that constitutes most of the kinase activity in eukaryotic cells, where it is distributed in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and membrane fractions (summarized by Kusuda et al., 1996). The monomeric enzyme (34 to 55 kD) phosphorylates hierarchically a variety of substrates without the involvement of the so-called second messenger in signal transduction.
