Acetylation of histone core particles modulates chromatin structure and gene expression. The opposing enzymatic activities of histone acetyltransferases and histone deacetylases, such as HDAC10, determine the acetylation status of histone tails .
HDAC10 transcript in all tissues examined and a 3.5-kb transcript mainly in kidney and testis. Real-time PCR analysis showed highest levels of HDAC10 expression in fetal brain, adult thymus and cerebellum, and a rhabdomyosarcoma cell line. In vitro translation of HDAC10v1 resulted in a protein with an apparent molecular mass of 72 kD. Immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy found HDAC10v1 expressed as a nuclear protein in transfected COS-7 cells and human embryonic kidney cells.
