Carboxylesterase 3 (CES3)
[Edit]Br3; ES31; Brain carboxylesterase 3; Esterase 31; Liver carboxylesterase 31 homolog
Carboxylesterase 3 is a member of a large multigene family. The enzymes encoded by these genes are responsible for the hydrolysis of ester- and amide-bond-containing drugs such as cocaine and heroin. They also hydrolize long-chain fatty acid esters and thioesters. The specific function of this enzyme has not yet been determined; however, it is speculated that carboxylesterases may play a role in lipid metabolism and/or the blood-brain barrier system. The RefSeq transcript and protein were derived from genomic sequence to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the transcript record were based on alignments. In addition, please note that the human CES3 gene is not orthologous to the mouse Ces3 gene.
