ATPases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the decomposition of ATP into ADP and a free phosphate ion.[1][2][3][4][5][6] This dephosphorylation reaction releases energy, which the enzyme (in most cases) harnesses to drive other chemical reactions that would not otherwise occur. By sequencing clones obtained from a size-fractionated brain cDNA library, Ishikawa et al. (1998) cloned ATP9A, which they designated KIAA0611. The deduced protein contains 912 amino acids. The apparent molecular mass of in vitro translated ATP9A was greater than 100 kD by SDS-PAGE. RT-PCR detected strong ATP9A expression in all tissues examined except spleen, which showed lower expression. By radiation hybrid analysis, Ishikawa et al. (1998) mapped the ATP9A gene to chromosome 20. Halleck et al. (1999) stated that the ATP9A gene maps to chromosome 20q13.1.
