The anaphylatoxins C3a, C4a, and C5a are cationic fragments generated during the complement cascade that participate in host defense. In the case of inappropriate complement activation, anaphylatoxins may be involved in autoimmunity and sepsis. C5L2 is coexpressed with the C5a receptor, C5AR (C5R1), on polymorphonuclear neutrophils and may modulate C5AR activity.
The predicted 337-amino acid 7-transmembrane protein has a calculated molecular mass of 37 kD. It has an N-terminal N-glycosylation site, several conserved cysteines, and several potential C-terminal phosphorylation sites. Northern blot analysis detected 2.4-kb and 3.8-kb transcripts in leukocytes, spleen, and testis, with weak or no expression in other tissues examined.
