Serum-inducible kinase is a member of the 'polo' family of serine/threonine protein kinases that have a role in normal cell division.
The deduced 685-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of about 78 kD and contains an ATP-binding motif within the kinase domain and a conserved polo box. SNK shares about 97% sequence identity with the mouse and rat proteins. Dot blot analysis indicated a ubiquitous low level of SNK expression. Highest expression was found in adult testis, spleen, putamen, and occipital lobe, and in fetal lung, spleen, kidney, and heart.The International Radiation Hybrid Mapping Consortium mapped the SNK gene to chromosome 5
