Protein phosphatase regulatory subunits, such as SAPS2, modulate the activity of protein phosphatase catalytic subunits by restricting substrate specificity, recruiting substrates, and determining the intracellular localization of the holoenzyme. SAPS2 is a regulatory subunit for the protein phosphatase-6 catalytic subunit (PPP6C) .
The deduced 966-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of 105 kD and contains a central alpha-helical SAPS domain of about 400 amino acids. Northern blot analysis detected 2 transcripts in all tissues examined, with highest expression in testis, followed by liver, heart, and brain.The deduced 927-amino acid protein shares significant similarity with yeast Sap190. RT-PCR detected strong SAPS2 expression in all tissues examined.
