Epigen (EPG)

Epogen is a prescription drug that is used to treat anemia due to chemotherapy, chronic kidney failure, and zidovudine (an HIV medication). Taking the medicine before surgery can also decrease the need for blood transfusions in people with anemia.

Epogen can be given either by IV or as an injection under the skin. It is generally given once a week or three times a week, depending on certain factors. Side effects may include constipation, nausea, fever, and fatigue. During treatment, it is important that your body has enough iron, otherwise Epogen cannot work well. Your healthcare provider may recommend iron supplements if necessary.
