DYX1C1 encodes a tetratricopeptide repeat domain-containing protein. The encoded protein interacts with estrogen receptors and the heat shock proteins, Hsp70 and Hsp90. A chromosomal translocation involving this gene is associated with a susceptibility to developmental dyslexia. Mutations in this gene are associated with deficits in reading and spelling. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
The DYX1C1 gene encodes a 420-amino acid protein with 3 tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) domains, thought to be protein interaction modules. Mouse Dyx1c1 protein is 78% identical to the human protein, and nonhuman primates differ at 0.5-1.4% of residues. In human brain, DYX1C1 protein localizes to a fraction of cortical neurons and white matter glial cells.
