Iridin is an isoflavone, a type of flavonoid. It is the 7-glucoside of irigenin and can be isolated from several species of irises like orris root, Iris florentina or Iris versicolor, also commonly known as the larger blue flag. It can also be found in Iris kemaonensis. The compound is toxic and these plants have been mentioned as causing poisoning in humans and animals.
A new isoflavone and two compounds with similar structures, namely 5, 7, 3′-trihydroxy-6, 2′, 5′-trimethoxyisoflavone, 5, 7, 3′-trihydroxy-6, 4′, 5′-trimethoxyisoflavone (irigenin) and its glucoside (iridin), were isolated from Belamcanda chinensis.Analysis of the methanol extracts of the rhizomes of Iris milesii resulted in the isolation of a new isoflavone, 5,6,7,4′-tetrahydroxy-3′-methoxyisoflavone and that of Iris kumaonensis, iriskumaonin methyl ether, iriskumaonin, irisflorentin, junipegenin-A, irigenin and iridin.
