The zinc finger domain is a conserved amino acid sequence motif containing 2 specifically positioned cysteines and 2 histidines that are involved in coordinating zinc. Kruppel-related proteins form 1 family of zinc finger proteins. The ZNF234 cDNA lacks start and stop codons; however, the authors stated that the coding sequence is probably minimally incomplete at both the 5-prime and 3-prime ends. The predicted ZNF234 protein, which consists of more than 695 amino acids, contains a KRAB A domain in the N terminus; a short spacer region, which does not share sequence similarity with the spacer regions of ZNF91 subfamily members; and a degenerate zinc finger motif followed by 18 canonical zinc finger motifs. Northern blot analysis detected a major 4.5-kb ZNF234 transcript in HeLa cells, U-937 cells, and PMA-induced U-937 cells.
