Solasodine is a poisonous alkaloid chemical compound that occurs in plants of the Solanaceae family. Solasonine and solamargine are glycoalkaloid derivatives of solasodine. Solasodine is teratogenic. The genus Solanum has received a lot of attention partly because of the presence of solasodine (SD), a pharmaceutically important compound and an alternative to diosgenin as a precursor for the commercial production of steroid drugs, in a number of its species. Isolation of SD is carried out from non differentiating cultured cells of S. khasianum induced from leaf explant. Experimentally isolated SD was characterized by using various analytical methods such as thin layer and high performance liquid chromatography, infra red and UV spectroscopy and determination of melting point. The SD yield expressed as 'solasodine equivalent' from 4-month-old callus tissue was remarkable at two per cent of dry weight.
