ATPase, H+ Transporting, Mitochondrial F0 Complex, Subunit E (ATP5I)
[Edit]ATP5K; ATP synthase subunit e, mitochondrial
The ATP5I gene encodes the e subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase F0 complex. The mitochondrial F1F0-ATP synthase uses energy derived from a proton gradient to synthesize ATP. The structure of this complex has been referred to as a 'lollipop,' as the soluble F1 catalytic unit is attached to the mitochondrial inner membrane via the F0 unit, which is anchored in the membrane and connected via a stalk structure to the F1 unit. Three proteins, designated e, f, and g, copurify with the F1F0 subunits, but are peripherally associated with the membrane or the stalk. The sequence is 96% similar to the e subunit of the bovine heart F1F0-ATP synthase and 98% similar to the e subunit from rat liver. The gene, which contains 3 introns and 4 exons, maps to mouse chromosome 5 (locus Atp5k).
