belongs to the tubulin family. Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. It binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha-chain. Undergoes a tyrosination/detyrosination cycle, the cyclic removal and re-addition of a C-terminal tyrosine residue by the enzymes tubulin tyrosine carboxypeptidase (TTCP) and tubulin tyrosine ligase (TTL).
The two remaining human group 3 α-tubulin genes, TUBA3D and TUBA3E, are on chromosome 2q21.1. Some parts of human chromosome 2 are syntenic with mouse chromosome 6 (over 100 genes in the MGI Oxford grid); however, TUBA3D and TUBA3E are not in these syntenic regions. Genes on the telomeric side of human TUBA3E, cent (CCDC115, IMP4, PTPN18) tel, have murine orthologs on mouse chromosome 1B.
