AGPAT4 encodes a member of the 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase family. This integral membrane protein converts lysophosphatidic acid to phosphatidic acid, the second step in de novo phospholipid biosynthesis. Converts lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) into phosphatidic acid by incorporating an acyl moiety at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone.
AGPAT1 and AGPAT2, which have been proven to carry out the AGPAT reaction (conversion of lysophosphatidic acid to phosphatidic acid), belong to the same subgroup. AGPAT3, AGPAT4, and AGPAT5, which have been reported to have very weak AGPAT activities, constitute two distinct subgroups.
