Ankyrins are membrane adaptor molecules that play important roles in coupling integral membrane proteins to the spectrin-based cytoskeleton network. Mutations of ankyrin genes lead to severe genetic diseases such as fatal cardiac arrhythmias and hereditary spherocytosis. contains 18 different introns. Transcription produces 11 different mRNAs, 10 alternatively spliced variants and 1 unspliced form. There are 3 probable alternative promotors, 2 non overlapping alternative last exons and 5 validated alternative polyadenylation sites. The mRNAs appear to differ by truncation of the 5' end, truncation of the 3' end, overlapping exons with different boundaries, alternative splicing or retention of 4 introns. 737 bp of this gene are antisense to spliced gene CORO6, raising the possibility of regulated alternate expression.
