FAM90A8 belongs to subfamily II of the primate-specific FAM90A gene family, which originated from multiple duplications and rearrangements. Exon 1 is noncoding and contains a LINE element, L1MB3, and the sequence 3-prime of the last exon includes a long terminal repeat of the ERV-K family. The deduced 434-amino acid FAM90A8 protein contains a CCHC-type zinc finger motif, suggesting that it may interact with RNA or DNA. RT-PCR using primers that did not distinguish between individual FAM90A genes suggested that members of FAM90A subfamily II, such as FAM90A8, are ubiquitously expressed.
