As part of a genomewide association study to identify SNPs associated with ulcerative colitis, Franke et al. (2010) identified IL17REL. The deduced protein contains 336 amino acids and is considered a close homolog of IL17RE. Database analysis revealed close orthologs in monkey, horse, and dog, with highest conservation from the N terminus through the central region, and lowest conservation at the C terminus. For discussion of a possible association between variation in the IL17REL gene and inflammatory bowel disease. A number sign is used with this entry because of evidence that mutations in the NOD2/CARD15 gene are associated with susceptibility to Crohn disease in families linked to chromosome 16. A promoter polymorphism in the IL6 gene is associated with susceptibility to Crohn disease-associated growth failure.
