l-stepholidine as a control was used as an adjuvant in anaesthesia. 107 cases received l-SPD, among them 18 cases were going through acupuncture anaesthesia, 24 brachial plexus block and 65 epidural block. 15-20 minutes after l-SPD 25 mg (0.6 mg/kg) given intramuscularly, most cases (94%) became tranquil and then gradually (34%) fell into somnolence. Same as l-THP,l-SPD didn't cause any significant cardiovascular disturbance. Upper abdominal surgery under epidual block, however, in exception, l-SPD induced a declination of blood pressure with a magnitude of 4.0 + SD2.5 kPa. while l-THP 2.0?1.6kPa simultaneously. There were bradycardia, nausea and vomiting, all were unable to be controlled by either l-THP or l-SPD. 2 cases, recceiving l-SPD, develoo-ed mental disorders. It indicates that l-SPD is not only a sedative but also a useful antibyperteasive agent which is quite helpful to minimize certain hypertensive response during operation.
