Ultrahigh sulfur keratin-associated protein 5.11

Keratin Associated Protein 5-11 (KRTAP5-11)
KRTAP5-11 Belongs to the KRTAP type 5 family.Restricted to hair root, not detected in any other tissues. In the hair cortex, hair keratin intermediate filaments are embedded in an interfilamentous matrix, consisting of hair keratin-associated protein (KRTAP), which are essential for the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft through their extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with abundant cysteine residues of hair keratins. The matrix proteins include the high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins. Keratin is the key structural material making up the outer layer of human skin. It is also the key structural component of hair and nails. Keratin monomers assemble into bundles to form intermediate filaments, which are tough and insoluble and form strong unmineralized tissues found in reptiles, birds, amphibians, and mammals.

Organism species: Homo sapiens (Human)
