Envelope glycoprotein, HIV2 (Env)

HIV-2 is a non-pandemic form of virus that causes AIDS, and most HIV-2-infected patients  exhibit long-term nonprogression. HIV-2 envelope glycoprotein is the target of neutralizing antibodies. Envelope glycoprotein is an inactive precursor that is heavily N-glycosylated and processed in the Golgi to yield mature SU and TM proteins. Mature envelope protein (Env) consists of non-covalently related gp120-gp41 heterodimers. The resulting complex protrudes from the surface of the virus as a spike. gp120 and gp41 interact with GalCer, and gp120 interacts with human CD4, CCR5, and CXCR4 to form a P4HB/PDI-CD4-CXCR4-gp120 complex. Some HIV-2 isolates can be independent of CD4 infected cells, using CXCR4 as the primary receptor.
