Glycosylated membrane protein 5(GP5) is the major envelope protein present in abundant amounts in Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus(PRRSV) envelope. It is encoded by ORF5 gene. GP5 protein is highly variable in PRRSV as it plays an important role in virus infection, as well as simultaneously inducing protective antibodies in the host. GP5 protein includes signal peptides, transmembrane regions, antigenic determinants, and glycosylation sites, which contains important immune domains related to virus neutralization as well as some peptides or protein motifs. As GP5 protein is greatly involved in the invasion, adsorption, and proliferation of PRRSV, it is of great interest to the pathogenicity, diagnosis, prevention, and control of PRRSV.
