Human Papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) is a virus that belongs to the papillomavirus family and is one of the primary pathogens responsible for causing cervical cancer and other genital cancers. HPV16 is one of the common high-risk HPV types and is associated with approximately 50% of cervical cancer cases worldwide. The Human Papillomavirus type 16 L1 protein (HPV16 L1) is the primary capsid protein of HPV16 and plays a crucial role in the formation of the viral particle. It can spontaneously assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) through interactions such as disulfide bonds and ionic bonds. These particles are structurally highly similar to natural viral particles, and this property of the L1 protein makes it an important component in the development of HPV vaccines.
